Stoffe zum Vorwaschen...oder nicht... / Fabric to Prewasch...or Not...

Gestern hatte ich genug neue Patchworkstoffe gesammelt, dass es sich lohnte, den ganzen Tag vorzuwaschen und zu bügeln...zumindest das, was vorgewaschen wird. Normalerweise sage ich einfach, dass ich alles vorwasche außer manche vorgeschnittene Stoffsets...
In letzter Zeit wurde ich öfter gefragt, ob und warum und wie ich meine Stoffe vorwasche also dachte ich dran dabei Fotos zu knipsen, um hier genauer zu zeigen, was ich mal nicht vorwasche.
1) Ein Quilt Kit, eine Anleitung mit Stoffe im Set die zum größten Teil genau zugeschnitten sind, dass ich sie nicht vorwasche, weil ich Angst hätte, dass sie eingehen und nicht mehr akkurat zu nähen sind. Und ich habe diesen Set extra so gewählt, weil die meisten Sets so knapp vorgeschnitten werden und ich wußte ja, dass ich sie wahrscheinlich nicht waschen kann...deshalb des ziemlich einheitlich buntes diese Kit ausgesucht, auch wegen die tolle Farben/Mustermix, weil ich hier das Färben/Eingehen riskieren kann und weil´s einfach und schnell zu nähen ist--ich brauche doch schnelle Quilt Tops um auf dem Longarm zu üben. :o)
Yesterday I got enough new fabrics stacked that I figured it was finally worth taking a day off for prewashing and ironing...at least those, that I actually do prewash. Normally I just answer that I wash everything except some precuts...
Since several people have asked me recently whether, why and how I prewash my fabrics, I thought to snap a few shots yesterday to show you what I don´t wash.
1) A quilt kit with instructions from the States in which most all fabrics are cut exactly to the size/width of the patchwork pieces needed and that I will not prewash, simply because I´d be afraid they´d shrink differently and not sew accurately together...I took this into account when I bought this kit, knowing this and due to the myriad of prints/colors involved in which I choose to take the risk of running colors/shrinkage in the finished quilt when washed, as well as being simple and quick to sew together--I need lots of quilt tops to practice quilting on the longarm!

 

Es gab ein schwarzer Stoff für´s Schrägband/Einfassung und ich habe auch passende 5 Yards Rückseitenstoff für die Rückseite mitbestellt dazu die ich vorgewaschen habe (und mit Charlies Hilfe gebügelt :o)):

There is a black fabric in the kit for the binding and I also bought matching 5 yards of fabric for the backing, both of which I prewashed (and with a little help from Charlie, ironed :o)):

 

Alles andere Meterware auch mitgewaschen und gebügelt, hatte ich nur noch ein Layer Cake (vorgeschnittene 10-inch Stoffset) und ein Charm Set (vorgeschnitten 5-inch) übrig:
After all the yardage was prewashed and ironed, all that I had left was a Layer Cake (precut 10-inch squares) and a Charm Square Set (5-inch precuts):

Zuerst der Layer Cake, sortierte ich alle dunkle Farben raus und fing an mit Waschmittel und kochendes Wasser zu testen, wie Farbfest sie sind und so oft ins heißen Bad dann kalt ausgewaschen bis das heiße Wasser weiß blieb. (Das oberste Rote oben im Bild hat beim 3. Waschbad nicht mehr geblutet, also wenn ich meterweise mehr davon hätte, konnte ich´s 2x in die Waschmaschine heiß waschen und wissen, dass es für´s Patchen startbereit ist. Diesmal haben ALLE Rote geblutet (meistens nur einmal), 2 Schwarze und 1 Blaue.)
First I worked thru the Layer Cake squares, sorting out all the darks and started testing/washing them singly in detergent and boiling water and rinsing them in cold water. I do this as often as necessary with the one piece of fabric until it doesn´t bleed any more color and the boiling suds solution stays clear. (The top red square in the foto above showed no more bleeding in the third bath; so if I had more yardage of that, I´d throw it in the washer on the hottest setting twice and know it would be safe for patching. In this set ALL the reds bled, two of the blacks and only one of the dark blues.)

 

 

 

Danach habe ich die Stoffstücke vorsichtig auf´s Bügelbrett ausgebreitet so, dass sie gerade sind und trocken *gepresst* (nicht gebügelt, soll nicht aus der Form gezogen werden), eins nach dem anderen. Braucht schon Zeit und Geduld...

Und beim kleinen Charm Set habe ich kein einziges Stoffstückchen gehabt, der geblutet hat aber trotzdem habe ich alle gewaschen und trocken gepresst, dass sie alle gleich *aufgeplüscht* sind. :o)

Afterward I spread a fabric piece carefully *square* on my ironing board and *pressed* it dry (as opposed to *ironing* it dry, since I don´t want to stretch it out of shape), one after the other. Yes, takes plenty of time and patience...

And not a single square of the smaller Charm Set bled in the boiling wash, but I went ahead and washed/ironed them all anyway, just to see them *swelled* (the fibers fatten up a bit) the same. :o)
